When he’s not DJing at Creamfields in the UK, Ushuaïa Beach Club in Ibiza or Avalon in LA, Thomas Gold can usually be found in the studio. He’s well known as a producer who can turn his hand to a variety of shades of 4/4, as evidenced by his output this year, which includes his unstoppable piano anthem ‘Non Stop’ on Armada, the raw, edgy ‘Hangover’ on Revealed, and big vocal track ‘Wildest Dream’ (featuring Matthew Steeper) on Nicky Romero’s Protocol. Thomas has started to build his own label stable this year too: “I’ve just launched my own FANFARE record label which has been my dream for a long time. This way I can give young and upcoming producers the chance to be able to spread their music. Also, I started a tech-house label ELEMENT 79, where I can put out the underground stuff also under my AU-1 alias.”
Since his recording debut in 2006, Thomas has turned his production skills to remixing artists like Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez and Paul van Dyk, and his music has also appeared on labels as varied as Toolroom, Skint, Spinnin’ and Axtone, a testament to his versatility as a producer.
Do you submit your DJ setlists to the relevant royalties collecting society?
“Yes, hope my management is doing that.”
What more can we do to combat the mental health crisis in our scene?
“I can only speak for myself, but family and close friends are always good to keep one grounded, from time to time not being constantly ‘online’, short breaks and a healthy lifestyle.”
Are you personally doing anything to improve the gender balance of line-ups?
“There are many talented female artists out there and I would definitely try to get more of them on line-ups IF I were in charge. Though I do not think it’s all about gender balance but rather about the diversity of music at festivals — be it male, female, or any other gender.”
What changes have you made this year to be more environmentally friendly?
“I’m ‘cleaning up’ my house of plastic products. We already replaced cups/shakers/food boxes with glass/metal ones and when I go grocery shopping, I bring my own bags instead of using the plastic bags from there. Reducing the products which are wrapped in plastic, doing groceries at smaller more eco-friendly shops. I got a soda maker instead of buying all those plastic bottles, and started growing my own veggies… In regard to carbon dioxide: well I have to fly, but trying to add CO2 compensation.”
What was your favourite toy when you were a kid?
“My Lego Technic.”
What’s your guilty pleasure?
“Drinking too much coffee – I just love it.”
